Cheri Schindler was born and raised in Upstate New York (Cobleskill) and graduated from Stony Brook University with a degree in History. After a brief experiment with Law School, she moved to NYC to work as a contractor for the Coast Guard. Over the next few years she moved at least once a year with her job until ending up at CG Headquarters in DC when she met her husband and moved to Newport News in 2011. She was raised to have a questioning spirit when it came to religion and views in general, including to question her own parents’ views and to follow her conscious, even if it means standing against the crowd. She very recently learned about Unitarian Universalism, and is happy to finally have a spiritual home. Cheri also greatly enjoys hiking, reading, and music. She is hoping to meet people that share those joys as well as well as exploring new interests like kayaking, green pursuits and social activism.
Dean Ceran finally became a member after coming to the UUFP since 2010, where he prefers the second service. Born in NY and raised in NJ, Dean is the second of four boys with his two younger brothers living in UT and CA. His older brother died from end stage AIDS in 2002. Dean has been divorced three times with four grown children from his 2nd wife and has five grandchildren who are not in the area. Dean works as a customer service rep handling calls for UPS. Without being military, he has been to or through thirtyfive of the fifty states. Single and dateless since 2010, his hobby is scenery photography, and he has thousands of photos in his Facebook photo albums in a series called, “VA Scenery”. He’s also the official photographer for the Doc Robin Band. He was selected to be “The Voice of God” in a recent UUFP Sunday service. But now that he’s an official member, it should be “The voice of God…or whatever you perceive God to be.” His big, low voice can easily hit the first note on a piano (even though he can’t carry a tune). Religiously speaking, born Lutheran, then raised Mormon, then found that the winding road of his religious path led him to a place that makes sense…the UUFP.
Ray McAdaragh was raised as an Irish Catholic in an Army family. Born in Ohio, he spent first grade in Japan and the rest of adolescence in Virginia and Alabama. He married his first wife and joined the Army after high school, and was divorced and out of the Army four years later. He began a life of seeking education and wisdom after that, acquiring four college degrees, including a Ph.D., and a martial arts degree of shodan. He spent the first half of his career as an Air Traffic Controller and the second half as an Aerospace Research Psychologist. Ray has been a guitarist most of his life, having played in rock bands when he was younger, and he now writes and plays folk songs. He has a daughter, a granddaughter and a great granddaughter from his first marriage and two adult sons with his current wife. He is attracted to the UUA because he shares their values and sense of purpose.
Katie Engel grew up in Yorktown. She moved to Florida when she was twelve, while her adult siblings remained in VA. After thirteen years in Florida, Katie decided she wanted to move “home” to Virginia. Just when she was ready to move, she met Chris at a Mensa Regional Gathering, and he was so cool that she put off moving for a year, when they moved here together. She works as the development coordinator at the Peninsula School for Autism. She loves playing with her nieces and nephews, traveling, dancing, cooking board games, and planning her wedding in May 2014.
Chris Hardwick grew up in Raleigh, NC, where he attended UNC, majoring in Math and German. After managing a tutoring center for several years, he moved to teach math at Full Sail University in Orlando, FL, where he met Katie. Together, they moved to Newport News early this year. Chris now works as a software tester at Trusted QA for Northrop Grumman. He enjoys his play time responsibilities as a future uncle, blind-solving Rubik’s cubes, working on his car, playing some mad saxophone, and getting ready for his wedding in May 2014.
Cliff and Connie Chadwick are local residents in Newport News. Both serviced in the military for a short time. Connie is an artist in several different medias including jewelry. They are happy to have the UUFP in their lives.
